LG launches the Optimus LTE Tag

LG has announced its newest addition to its LTE smartphone line-up for the Korean market - the Optimus LTE Tag.
It features a 4.3-inch IPS display with a pixel resolution of 800 x 480. The phone is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread (with the option to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich later). The Optimus LTE Tag is available in white.
The Optimus LTE Tag gets its name from a new feature, LG Tag+, which uses NFC (Near Field Communication) to communicate with special stickers or "tags" that can be programmed to automatically change the phone's settings. It sports a 5 megapixel rear camera with Auto focus-LED Flash and a 1.3 megapixel front camera. The phone has a 1,700mAh battery.

"Swiping a tag upon entering the office could put the Optimus LTE Tag in silent mode and activate Wi-Fi. A tag on the car dashboard could be programmed to turn on Bluetooth, GPS and raise the volume. The options are limitless," said the company in a release.

South Korea is going to be getting this device first in March and at the moment there's no indication when it will hit other markets. However it's safe to assume LG is going to release this elsewhere eventually and it does have plans to show off the device at the MWC next month.

Windows 8 Logo Is Actually a Window

Microsoft’s devotion to its “Metro” design aesthetic doesn’t stop at Windows 8, Windows Phone and the most recent Xbox Dashboard: it also influenced the new Windows 8 logo.

Unlike previous iterations of the Windows logo, which embraced wavy lines to the point where people mistook it for a flag, the revised Windows 8 logo is clearly,  a window. “If you look back at the origins of the logo you see that it really was meant to be a window,” he wrote. We did less of a re-design and more to return it to its original meaning and bring Windows back to its roots.”
http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/images/4/2012/02/a68f3db8fcdd8f07316239a2289421fe.jpg

It’s perhaps ironic that, despite Windows’ logo returning to its roots, Windows 8 represents something of a radical deviation from the “traditional” Windows user interface. In a bid to run effectively on both tablets and PCs, Windows 8 features a “Metro”-style "start" screen of colorful tiles linked to applications—the better to tap and swipe, if the device running the OS happens to feature a touch-screen. Power users and those who want the old-style Windows experience can flip from there to a fully actualized desktop, which has undergone some tweaks of its own.

Microsoft executives claim that Windows 8 will offer “no compromises” in either its tablet or traditional PC iterations. Indeed, Windows on ARM  will feature a modified version of “Office 15,” the upcoming version of Microsoft’s Office software.

Within the Windows desktop, WOA includes desktop versions of the new Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, code-named ‘Office 15,  WOA will be a no-compromise product for people who want to have the full benefits of familiar Office productivity software and compatibility.

Google admits tracking Safari users

Google has come under attack for violating users' privacy and ignoring their wishes after admitting that it intentionally circumvented security settings in Apple's Safari browser to track users on both desktop computers and iPhones.

"It's time for Google to acknowledge that it can do a better job of respecting the privacy of web users," the EFF said in a statement, in which it warned: "Google, the time has finally come. You need to make a pro-privacy offering to restore your user's trust … it's time for a new chapter in Google's policy regarding privacy. It's time to commit to giving users a voice about tracking and then respecting those wishes."

The company may also be tracking people without their knowledge on other browsers, including those on its own Android phones, because those do not implement the same security restrictions as Apple does.

The circumvention, carried out by a small piece of code, meant that people could see messages indicating whether their associates in Google "Circles" on its Google+ social network had clicked on ads – but it also let Google and other advertisers see which websites people landed on.
Mayer told the Guardian that his team had been looking into what was being done for two months, and was sure it had been used by Google certainly since December – though it could have been running since July 2011.
Google declined to answer a Guardian request to say when it had begun the tracking.
The search giant insisted that a report in the Wall Street Journal, which first revealed the tracking, mischaracterised its actions, and that the users' identities had remained anonymous throughout – although they were signed in to Google's systems.

Apple to release iPad 3 on March 29, 2012

Rumors are rife that Apple may release the brand new iPad 3 with the end of March. Apple has scheduled a media event the following month on March 29. News leaked because of the nearby electronic makers say that many hi-tech components are already sent to Apple because last quarter of 2011.
The TSMC- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company has received a really big ‘order’ for 28nm APUs from AMD (Advanced Micro Devices). AMD confirmed this Friday that it’ll shake hands with TSMC to manufacture 28nm Krishna Wichita accelerated processing unit (APUs) during the initial phase.
Due to Chinese New Year, the launch of iPad 3 may be postponed till the end of March rather then beginning of March. This long holidays brought disappointment to the numerous Apple’s fans for delayed date of iPad 3’s release.
The new iPad 3 is slated for being thinner and lighter as well as have an A6 quad-core processor. March 29 is not a long way away, quickly, we might see people playing around while using super-power quad-core iPad 3.

Xbox 720 console code-named 'Durango'

Xbox 720, Xbox Loop, neXt-box.  We've heard all the rumored names for Microsoft's next-gen Xbox console.  Except for one.
Kotaku has heard from "multiple sources close to the project" that Microsoft's next Xbox console (what we've been calling the Xbox 720) will be code-named "Durango".
By far the least entertaining of the rumors we've heard surrounding the Xbox 720, this could be the most informative if true.  You see, the Xbox "Durango" won't be the finished product name, but it will be the name you will hear most often during the console's final development phase - the time when Microsoft announces the console until it ships. Also expected is that the Durango will have strong voice and motion controls like the Xbox 360 Kinect, and it will have a much stronger approach to 3D content. Some also predict it will allow players to play online games for free, and employ a premium service similar to Sony's Playstation Plus.
Of course, who knows when that will actually begin.  Despite rumors that the Xbox Durango (or Xbox 720) is already being worked on, Microsoft has denied all rumors of a next-gen console announcement, most recently squashing the E3 2012 reveal rumor.
Durango doesn't necessarily mean anything as far as the system is concerned.  It's just a name.  Microsoft's Xbox Kinect was code-named Project Natal before being named "Kinect".

Leaked Fujitsu roadmap shows Q4 Windows 8 launch

A Fujitsu slide has dropped a fairly big hint that Windows 8 will launch in Q4 2012

Fujitsu Windows 8 RoadmapA Fujitsu presentation slide has made its way online and shows the company's tablet and laptop roadmap for 2012, which includes a Windows 8 tablet planned for the fourth quarter.
The photo, leaked by Netbook Italia, shows an Android tablet arriving in June this year, which could be the ‘Arrows' tablet showcased at CES in January.
There's also a Transformer style tablet-laptop hybrid pegged for September, though it isn't clear what platform this device will be running.
The box at the end of the roadmap clearly shows a tablet-like device featuring Windows 8's Live Tile interface alongside the Microsoft Windows logo, a Q4 2012 label and a tag which reads ‘Win8 Launch'.
This may well ruffle a few feathers at Microsoft which has consistently avoided pinning any kind of release schedule, though rumours, allegedly from within the company, have hinted at a summer launch.
It's possible that this is simply an indication of when Fujitsu plans to launch its device running the Windows 8 platform and an earlier release from Microsoft could still be in the pipeline.
Of course we'd like Windows 8 to come out as soon as possible, but we have a feeling Fuji
tsu may have let the cat out the bag here and we're looking at much later in the year than we'd hoped for Microsoft's tablet and PC operating system to arrive.

Steve Jobs FBI file reveals new details

(CBS News) A secret FBI file on Steve Jobs is revealing new details about the late Apple co-founder and chief executive officer.
From the file, it seems Jobs spent some time working for the government, reportedly on satellite and software-related programs. In fact, in 1988, Jobs held a "Top Secret" clearance. He lost that clearance
in 1990. It's not known if Jobs was aware of his FBI file, but he was interviewed during the background check and cooperated.
The FBI file also includes what his friends and co-workers actually thought of him -- and some of it is not nice.
The FBI file, released
under the Freedom of Information Act, gives us new insights into Jobs' personality. His colleagues respected his genius, but many found him to be stubborn and demanding. One worker at Apple Computer called Jobs, "A deceptive individual who is not completely forthright and honest." Another colleague defended Jobs saying he was a man of "...high moral character and integrity."
But, multiple friends and associates warned he could be abrasive and had a "tendency to distort reality in order to achieve his goals."
The comments come from a 191-page file the FBI compiled in 1991. Agents were conducting a background check after President George H.W. Bush appointed Jobs to the Presidents Export Council.
Among the more than two dozen people interviewed, they universally said Jobs, while not perfect, was a worthy presidential adviser. But, one co-worker cynically noted, "...honesty and integrity are not required qualities to hold such a position."
The FBI investigation revealed there were troubles in his personal life.
One colleague said Jobs initially "mistreated" a daughter he had out of wedlock by failing to support her. But, added "...recently Mr. Jobs has been more supportive."
He was C+ high school student with a 2.65 grade point average. And Jobs admitted to the FBI that he was a casual drug user in the early '70s and "experimented with marijuana, hashish, and LSD." But Jobs assured agents he "never sold any drugs" and was never convicted of a crime.
The file, though, does reveal Jobs was the target of extortion. Handwritten notes seen in the file were made by the FBI in 1985 after someone phoned in a bomb threat that targeted Jobs and Apple. The caller, who demanded $1 million, was never paid and never found.

Microsoft OneNote Now Available for Android

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint may get all the attention, but OneNote has quickly become the gem of the Microsoft Office suite. Microsoft is now extending the reach of OneNote with an app for Android smartphones and tablets.

OneNote Mobile for AndroidA post on the Microsoft OneNote Blog exclaims, “For all of you who've been asking (and patiently waiting) for a version of OneNote for your Android phones, we have great news: OneNote Mobile for Android is now available!”
A breakdown of key features of the OneNote Mobile for Android app.The Android app further extends the reach of OneNote. It is already part of the Windows version of the Microsoft Office suite, and it is available on Windows Phone, iPhone, and on iPad.
OneNote is arguably the most versatile product in the Microsoft Office lineup. You can make lists, track to-dos, take notes, organize information. You can also use it to manage projects and collaborate with others by sharing out notebooks you create.
OneNote Mobile for Android has similar features and capabilities to its app counterparts on Windows Phone and iOS. You can store and access OneNote notebooks, sync notes with Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud service, and store notebooks for offline access. The app provides quick and easy access to your most recent notes, and allows you to embed pictures taken with the camera on your Android device within notes.
Whether you use OneNote personally, or as a project management or collaboration tool with others, the addition of the Android app is welcome. Many people have Windows PCs, an Android smartphone, and an iPad, or some similar cross-platform collection of devices. The value of OneNote is in being able to create, access, and edit the information contained in OneNote no matter what platform you are using at the time.
Like the iOS version, OneNote Mobile for Android is offered for free from Microsoft, but has a maximum limit of 500 notes. Once you hit the max, you will have to purchase the unlimited version for $4.99 or you will no longer be able to create or edit notes from the Android app. You will, however, still be capable of syncing and viewing the notes you have created on other platforms.

Is Facebook accurately counting its daily active users?

Facebook's monthly and daily active users increase rapidly, but a deeper analysis of those figures has revealed that they might not tell the whole story.

Smartphones overtake PC shipments during 2011

Smartphones have overtaken PC shipments in 2011, with Apple the leading smartphone seller last year due to the fourth quarter performance of the iPhone 4S.
New research from Canalys showed there were 487.7m smartphones shipped last year, up 62.7% on 2010. The number of PCs shipped, including netbooks, notebooks and desktops, was 414.6m, up 14.8% on the previous year. Smartphones had a strong fourth quarter with 158.5m shipped, up 56.6% on the same period in 2010. This also outstripped PC shipments, with only 120.2m sold during that quarter.
Smartphones overtake PC shipments during 2011However, the analysts were cautious about smartphone growth continuing to flourish into 2012. It predicted manufacturers will exercise greater cost control and discpline, and focus more on profitability.
Canalys said Apple's fourth quarter performance, when it shipped 37.0m iPhones, smashed the record of Nokia's 28.3m smartphones shipped during Q4 2010. It said Apple's 2011 performance was down to pent-up demand for the iPhone 4S but also high demand for the

Microsoft Windows Phone 8 Details Leak

Rumors surfaced this week concerning Microsoft’s upcoming mobile operating system, Windows Phone 8.  The rumors come from a leaked video featuring Joe Belfiore, a Microsoft senior vice president and manager of the Windows Phone project, and include a few obvious features as well as a particularly intriguing new initiative for Microsoft’s mobile phone division.

Most of the updates focus on scalability and versatility. For example, WP8 (codenamed “Apollo”) will support multicore processors, multiple screen resolutions, removable storage via MicroSD cards, and support for NFC radios. These changes seem to serve mostly as a catch-up measure to iOS and Android devices, which have historically beat Windows Phone in side-by-side hardware comparisons.
Data consumption seems to be another major component of Apollo. A feature called DataSmart will provide a breakdown of data usage, and will attempt to reduce consumption by giving Wi-Fi connections precedence and routing Internet Explorer web page requests through a proxy server for compression, which Belfiore claims could reduce data usage by 30%.
The most interesting detail from the leaked video is that Microsoft plans to unify Windows Phone 8 and the desktop version of Windows 8, going as far as to share a kernel, networking stacks, and security features such as BitLocker encryption. The goal of this unification is to allow developers to reuse large portions of their code between mobile and desktop versions of their software. Microsoft also intends to create a new, dedicated desktop application for syncing a WP8 device, dropping support for the Zune application and addressing a major complaint from users of the platform.
This move to unify the desktop and mobile versions of Windows could prove to be lucrative for Microsoft—if developers are able to easily port their apps to run on PCs, tablets and smartphones, they may flock to the Windows ecosystem to get the most exposure for their products. Since the Windows Phone ecosystem current trails Android and iOS in app selection by a factor of ten, this unification could boost WP device sales significantly.
Although Microsoft has traditionally lagged behind Apple and Google in the mobile phone sector, Windows Phone 8 may give the platform a much-needed advantage over its competition. We believe WP8 will be released sometime in mid-2012.

27 downloads you shouldn't miss this week

The update rate for web browsers is faster than ever, and this has been a particularly busy week for Firefox, starting off with the release of Firefox 10 FINAL. While there aren’t a huge number of big, notable changes, aside from perhaps the rejigged forward button that hides until it is needed, this is still an important milestone and offers impressive performance and stability improvements over previous version as well as better support for third-party addons.

There is also a portable version of the browser available in the form of Firefox Portable 10.0. The release of a new stable version of Firefox means that there has been a spate of releases in the other channels, including Firefox 11 Beta 1. If you’d like to peer a little further into the future, Firefox Aurora 12.0a2 gives a taste of what to expect from upcoming releases.

For anyone who wants to check out the very latest browser, the nightly versions of Firefox are worth checking out, but are not really stable enough for day to day use. This week we have seen the release of Firefox Nightly 13.0a1 (32-bit) and Firefox Nightly 13.0a1 (64-bit).

Lit Motors' C-1 electric motorcycle

As any avid biker will tell you, motorcycles have a lot of advantages over cars - they use less fuel, accelerate faster, are more maneuverable, can be parked in more places, and don't incorporate the weight of extra seating for passengers who are non-existent on solo commutes. As many other people will tell you, however, motorcycles also leave their occupants open to the rain and cold, and can potentially tip over and scatter those occupants across the road. That's where Lit Motors' C-1 comes into the picture. It's a proposed fully-enclosed two-passenger electric motorbike that uses an electronically-controlled gyroscopic stabilizing system to stay upright when stopped, or even when struck from the side in an accident.

“With Xperia ion, we’re bringing together several firsts that will take users beyond the smartphone,” said Paul Hamnett, President, Sony Ericsson North America. “Designed to deliver a seamless experience across the multiple screens we use to play, watch, listen, and share, Xperia ion is the gateway to entertainment when and – most importantly – where you want it.”

Ten hot tech products slated to be launched in 2012

The 2012 version of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has just kicked off in Las Vegas. Many products and technologies for the year will be on display at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The 2011 has been a brilliant year for technology with many incredible products under tablet, smartphone, Ultrabook, notebook and other categories. Here are some products that are going to make news in the year ahead.

Samsung Galaxy S III
The third version of Samsung’s famous Galaxy S series smartphones has been much awaited. Galaxy S II, which hit stores mid 2011, has been doing well in global markets in fight with iPhone 4. The Korean tech major will be working to roll out a state-of-the-art next gen version for the phone, which may possibly appear in stores a bit earlier than its regular schedule. Some rumors said Galaxy S III would have a 12-megapixel real camera. However, it is certain that the phone will be running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Tech Smart TVs turning on interactive features.

Television makers LG Electronics Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. and Lenovo Group Ltd., mired in competition over flat-screen prices, are introducing interactive features to give shoppers a reason to buy a new set.
At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas opening Monday, LG and Lenovo will show TVs that allow users to search for shows and Web applications with natural-sounding voice commands. Samsung introduced three high-end models with so- called Smart Interaction technology, which builds in motion- sensing and voice-command software similar to Microsoft Corp.’s Kinect peripheral for the Xbox 360 video-game console.

5 gadget trends to watch at CES

(CNN) -- Like a stereotypical beauty pageant, it looks like thin will be in at the world's largest annual gadget convention next week in Las Vegas.
At the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show, computer makers will be pushing a new breed of ultra-thin, ultra-light laptops amid a sea of razor-thin smartphones and tablets.
Last year, 140,000 people in the technology industry convened at the Las Vegas Convention Center to mingle and gawk at cutting-edge hardware. The organizers expect to welcome at least that many people next week.
Electronics makers use CES as a platform to show the types of products they plan to release in the coming year. The compact disc player, high-definition television and Blu-ray each debuted at past conventions. Decades since its formation, the yearly six-day event is a spectacle.
But with some of the largest players in today's consumer electronics industry shunning CES, the trade show's impact may be waning.

Samsung Galaxy S 3

We have seen so many different renders of the Galaxy S3, and while most of them were fakes, we have also heard many rumors about the Galaxy S3′s specs. But here is something we haven’t heard yet, Samsung might be incorporating 3D (glassless) functionality into the Galaxy S3 line of Android phones. This would complete Samsung’s ecosystem, along with their 3D televisions which are on sale now.
As far as specs go, nothing has been confirmed with Samsung but we have seen rumors that it will feature a Super AMOLED Plus HD screen, 2GB of RAM, a Quad-Core processor, LTE connectivity, running on Android’s latest ICS firmware with Touchwiz – Samsung’s own overlay. If Samsung does unveil the Galaxy S3 at Mobile World Congress in 2012, it will run right in line with their yearly refresh of the Galaxy S lineup.

Windows 8 New Features

Windows 8 will be the next version of the Microsoft Windows computer operating system following Windows 7. It has many changes from previous versions. In particular it adds support for ARM microprocessors in addition to the previously supported x86 microprocessors from Intel and AMD. A new Start Screen interface has been added that was designed for touchscreen input in addition to mouse, keyboard, and pen input.

Windows 8 will contain a new user interface based on Microsoft's design language named Metro. With the new change, the Start Menu was replaced in favor for the new Start Screen, where there are tiles that contain shortcuts to applications, Metro style applications, and updating tiles, similar to Program Manager and Windows Phone. Metro may be turned off in the Windows Registry settings.
A new authentication method allows users to sketch in three different places over the picture to login, instead of typing a password.
Windows Explorer now uses a ribbon interface, similar to those used in Microsoft Office applications.
Another feature expected to be introduced in Windows 8 is native USB 3.0 support, without the need to load drivers.
Windows 8 will come with Windows Store, an online marketplace for buying, selling, and advertising applications.
Windows 8 can be run from a USB-connected drive, such as a flash drive. This feature is called Windows To Go. It is intended for enterprise administrators to provide users with a Windows 8 image that reflects the corporate desktop; pricing and licensing details were not discussed when the feature was announced.WTG is not included in Windows 8 previews.
Windows 8 will support multiple monitors with the new ability to natively display different background images on each display and customized taskbar(s) on each of the connected displays.
The Developer Preview comes with two new recovery functions. Refresh and Reset, which both make a complete restore easier than a re-installation. The former keeps all the settings and files of the user intact and only reverses all changes to Windows files to its original state while removing all installed programs and apps. The latter deletes all files and effectively re-installs Windows, but without any additional user input such as agreeing to license agreements or selecting a hard disk required. After a reset completes, the user will be asked for the product key and will then proceed to account creation.
One big change is that user accounts do not have to be local-only (or from an Active Directory domain) anymore but can be linked up to one's Windows Live ID. This has the advantage that users will not lose their settings and files as they move from their home computer to their work laptop or to any other computer also using Windows 8.
Other new features include a new Welcome screen, a new packaged application model called AppX that is based on Silverlight, and Open Packaging Conventions, as well as a setting to automatically adjust window color to fit the wallpaper.
There is also a stripped down "Immersive" version of Internet Explorer, using the similar Metro-based user interface of the mobile version of Internet Explorer 9. The Immersive Version of Internet Explorer 10 does not support ActiveX plugins, in order to be an HTML5-only browser. The Desktop version of IE10 does support ActiveX plugins.
A new "Hybrid Boot" option that uses "advanced hibernation functionality" on shutdown to allow faster startup times.
A new version of Task Manager with a redesigned user interface is also present in pre-release versions of Windows 8.

4G LTE

In telecommunications, 4G is the fourth generation of cellular wireless standards. It is a successor to the 3G and 2G families of standards. In 2009, the ITU-R organization specified the IMT-Advanced (International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced) requirements for 4G standards, setting peak speed requirements for 4G service at 100 Mbit/s for high mobility communication (such as from trains and cars) and 1 Gbit/s for low mobility communication (such as pedestrians and stationary users).
